Why buy saffron from Saffrona?

Saffrona offers hand-picked Afghan saffron from Herat, packed in Germany. Our family business connects the farms with customers and supports women working in saffron production. Eurofins assessed batch L2025-01 as Special Grade under ISO 3632-1:2025, based on the tests performed.

Afghan saffron, including saffron grown in Herat, is valued for its distinctive aroma and colouring strength. Quality depends on cultivation, harvesting, drying and storage; origin alone does not determine a saffron’s quality grade.

Saffron is a spice made from the dried red stigmas of Crocus sativus. Each flower produces three stigmas, which are separated by hand and carefully dried. Saffron adds a golden colour and a distinctive aroma to rice, sauces, baked goods and drinks.

Look for recognisable red stigmas with widened tips, a characteristic aroma and clear origin information. Saffron releases yellow colour when infused, but home tests cannot reliably prove authenticity. Independent laboratory testing offers stronger evidence than appearance or a water test alone.

Saffron can be used as a culinary spice. Daily supplement use is a different question: there is no single recommended daily dose suitable for everyone, and concentrated extracts differ from culinary threads. Ask a healthcare professional about regular supplemental use, especially if you take medicines or have a medical condition.

Keep saffron in a tightly closed container in a cool, dry place, protected from light, heat and moisture. Avoid opening it over steam. Follow the best-before date on your pack; aroma and colour may gradually decline during storage.

Saffron production involves intensive manual work. Flowers are harvested during a short season, and their delicate stigmas are separated, dried and sorted. The small yield of spice per flower, together with careful processing and quality checks, contributes to its price.

Follow your recipe and start with a small pinch: saffron is concentrated, and too much can dominate a dish. Gently crush the threads, infuse them in a little warm water, milk or stock, then add the liquid and threads to the recipe. Thread size varies, so thread counts are not a reliable substitute for weight.

Researchers have studied saffron preparations for outcomes such as mood and sleep. Findings from particular extracts or clinical trials do not establish that our culinary saffron treats or prevents disease. Saffrona sells saffron as food, and it should not replace medical care.

Explore our Saffron Academy for research summaries that distinguish laboratory findings from human evidence.

High doses or concentrated preparations can cause adverse effects. Reported effects include digestive symptoms; individual reactions and risks vary. Avoid self-prescribing a medicinal dose and seek professional advice about supplements, prolonged use or possible medicine interactions.

Evidence on saffron use during pregnancy is limited, and culinary use should not be confused with concentrated or medicinal preparations. We do not recommend saffron supplements or therapeutic doses during pregnancy without advice from your doctor or midwife. Ask them about your individual circumstances rather than relying on a numerical “safe dose” from a shop page.

Saffron has a history of use in traditional preparations, dyes and cosmetics, and saffron extracts are also studied in research. These uses do not demonstrate a medical benefit from culinary saffron. Our products are intended for food and drink preparation.

Saffron is grown in countries including Iran, Afghanistan, Spain, India, Greece, Morocco and Italy. Suitable soil, drainage and seasonal conditions matter, while cultivation and processing methods influence the finished spice. Saffrona’s Afghan saffron comes from Herat.

Yes. Saffron works well in tea, milk drinks, rice puddings, cakes, ice cream and other desserts. Infuse a small amount in a liquid used by your recipe and adjust to taste. Cardamom, rose, citrus and vanilla can complement its aroma.
