Saffrona LAAL is our pure-red cut of Afghan saffron. The deep-red portions of the stigmas are separated from the yellow base, gently dried and carefully sorted by hand.
The result is a visually distinctive selection for cooks who value saffron’s colour, aroma and characteristic flavour.
Afghan origin and the meaning of LAAL
The name evokes the ruby and its deep-red colour. It connects the appearance of the threads with the Afghan cultural inspiration behind Saffrona’s terminology.
Our saffron comes from Herat, Afghanistan. The product name makes the cut easy to recognise for international customers while keeping its origin visible.

How does the cut relate to other saffron names?
Terms such as Negin, Pushal and Dasteh are used in Iranian saffron trading. Saffrona uses LAAL, PAYWAND and ZARRIN to describe its own selections inspired by Afghan saffron traditions.
LAAL identifies separate red portions without a yellow base. It describes the appearance and preparation of the threads; it does not establish that every product from one country is better than saffron from another.

Saffrona’s three-part naming system
Developed by Saffrona in Germany and inspired by Afghan traditions, the names help customers compare the forms:
- LAAL: pure-red cut.
- PAYWAND: joined-crown cut with a small golden base.
- ZARRIN: whole threads combining red and gold.
Where can you use LAAL?
- Desserts, milk drinks, tea and baking.
- Fine cooking and pâtisserie.
- Dishes where saffron’s colour and aroma are central.
Use a small amount and prepare an infusion to distribute it evenly. The number of portions a gram will flavour depends on the recipe, extraction and intensity you prefer; a fixed serving promise would be misleading.
