Spiced Saffron Tea — A Warming Caffeine-Free Infusion

Contents

Spiced saffron tea is a warming water-based infusion for autumn and winter. A few saffron threads and one carefully chosen spice give it a balanced aroma. This recipe contains no tea leaves, caffeine or added sugar.

What is spiced saffron tea?

It is an infusion of saffron in water, complemented by a small quantity of spice. Cinnamon, cardamom and clove are familiar partners for warm drinks. Here, one spice per cup helps preserve saffron’s fine character.

Ingredients for one cup

  • 250 ml water
  • 3–5 saffron threads
  • Choose one: 1 small cinnamon stick, 2–3 lightly crushed cardamom pods, or 1 clove

Do not add all the spices at once for this version. The listed threads are a culinary quantity, not a supplement or therapeutic dose; thread sizes vary.

How to make spiced saffron tea

  1. Lightly crush the saffron threads in a mortar.
  2. Place the saffron and your chosen spice in a heatproof cup.
  3. Pour over freshly boiled water.
  4. Steep for 8–12 minutes so the colour and aroma can develop.
  5. Remove the whole spice or strain the infusion.
  6. Let it cool to a comfortable drinking temperature and enjoy warm.

Balanced flavour and a winter ritual

The pleasure of this drink lies in warmth, aroma and a quiet moment. Enjoy it in the afternoon or evening, or after time outdoors. It is a culinary infusion, and this recipe does not establish a medical, mood or sleep benefit.

  • Keep the spice quantity small so it does not mask the saffron.
  • Use a heatproof cup for the hot water.
  • Strain whole spices before drinking.
  • If a particular spice does not suit you, leave it out and make a plain saffron infusion instead.
