Saffron has attracted scientific interest in this area, but the evidence needs careful interpretation: a promising result from a particular extract is not a promise that a cup of saffron tea will treat chronic stress.

At a glance

Small clinical studies have investigated saffron extracts and stress responses. Results are preliminary and depend on the preparation and outcome measured. Saffron is not an established treatment for anxiety disorders, and research does not support a general claim that it “lowers cortisol”.

ResearchCortisolEveryday useSafetyQuestions

What does research on saffron and stress show?

Stress research measures different things: how participants feel, their response to a laboratory challenge, hormone measurements and longer-term symptoms. These outcomes are related, but they are not interchangeable. A change in one marker does not by itself establish a meaningful improvement in everyday life.

A small study of an acute stress response

A 2023 crossover trial enrolled 19 healthy young men and compared a single dose of a specific saffron extract, isolated safranal and placebo during a laboratory stress test. It reported changes in subjective responses and delayed cortisol and cortisone peaks. Peak concentrations and overall hormone exposure did not significantly change. The manufacturer funded the trial, and several authors were employees. This small, narrow study cannot establish treatment benefits for chronic stress in the wider population. Read the study.

Longer-term mood and wellbeing research

A 2021 trial in healthy adults studied a defined saffron extract over eight weeks. Some mood and stress-response measures improved, but the anxiety questionnaires did not show a significant treatment effect. The study was manufacturer-funded. Selected positive findings should therefore be read alongside its negative results and limitations. Read the trial.

Does saffron lower cortisol?

It is too broad to describe saffron as a proven cortisol-lowering remedy. The acute trial above found a difference in the timing of hormone peaks, without a significant reduction in peak concentration or total exposure. “Modulating a stress response” in a research setting is not the same as correcting a hormone disorder.

Cortisol also has normal physiological roles. If you are concerned about symptoms or a hormone test, discuss the results with a qualified clinician rather than trying to adjust them with a supplement.

Why are saffron’s compounds being studied?

Research examines compounds including crocins, crocetin and safranal. Reviews discuss possible biological mechanisms and experimental findings, but a proposed mechanism does not prove a clinical effect in humans. A review of neuro-cognitive research is useful background, not direct evidence that saffron treats everyday restlessness. Explore the scientific overview.

Saffron threads, tea and extracts: understand the difference

A capsule containing a characterised extract differs from whole saffron threads steeped in water or used in cooking. The concentration, composition and preparation vary. Milligrams of an extract cannot be converted into a reliable number of threads, and study results should not be transferred directly to tea.

If you enjoy saffron as a culinary ingredient, a warm drink can be a pleasant part of a quiet evening. Treat that experience as a food ritual rather than a tested treatment. Our evening saffron tea recipe explains preparation, flavour and temperature without promising a medical effect.

Restlessness, fatigue and difficulty switching off

These experiences can occur together, but they do not identify one cause. Persistent or worsening symptoms deserve attention, particularly when they affect sleep, work or relationships. Do not use a reassuring “natural” label as a reason to postpone appropriate care.

For related reading, visit our guides to saffron and anxiety and sleep and relaxation.

Safety and responsible use

Do not replace prescribed medicines or psychological treatment with saffron. Before taking a concentrated supplement, ask a doctor or pharmacist about your medicines and health conditions. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and use in children require particular caution; see our pregnancy guide.

Do not escalate an amount because a benefit is not immediately noticeable. Product-specific study doses are research details, not individual prescriptions. A short laboratory trial does not demonstrate reliable relief of stress or anxiety in everyday situations.

Can saffron tea replace a tested extract?

No equivalent dose or effect has been established. Enjoy tea for its aroma and flavour, while keeping clinical extract research separate.

Does “natural” mean free of side effects?

No. Preparation, amount, medicines and individual health all matter. Small studies cannot rule out uncommon effects or establish safety for every group.

Explore the Saffron Academy

Continue with the Saffron Academy for practical recipes, quality guidance and carefully explained research.

Scientific sources

Pouchieu et al.
