Those are different questions. Feeling calm, feeling drowsy and being sedated are not the same, and a study of sleep quality cannot automatically answer all three.

A realistic starting point

Saffron extract research includes promising sleep findings, but it does not establish an immediate sedative effect from a culinary drink. Choose tea or milk for enjoyment, and seek advice for persistent sleep difficulties or concerns about a supplement.

Sleepiness and calmResearchEvening routineSafetyQuestions

Calm, sleepy or sedated?

Feeling calmer describes a reduction in perceived tension. Sleepiness is the sensation of being ready to sleep. Sedation involves a reduction in alertness and can affect reactions. These experiences should not be used as interchangeable descriptions of saffron.

Someone enjoying a warm drink late in the day may notice their existing tiredness. The time of day, previous sleep, the setting and other ingredients can all affect the experience. A personal impression cannot identify saffron as the cause or prove a particular biological mechanism.

What do sleep studies tell us?

A 2020 trial reported improved self-reported sleep quality with a standardised saffron extract over a short study period. It investigated a defined preparation rather than tea or milk. Such findings do not show that culinary saffron acts like a sleeping pill. View the publication.

A 2025 pilot study enrolled 52 older adults with sleep complaints and examined four weeks of a standardised extract. It reported improvements in sleep measures, but its size, duration and selected population limit generalisation. The peer-reviewed publication is now available; the earlier medRxiv version was a preprint. Read the published study.

Sleep quality, time spent awake and daytime alertness are distinct outcomes. Evidence of improvement in one measure does not guarantee relief of insomnia, establish safety for every individual or demonstrate an immediate effect after an evening cup.

What about proposed calming mechanisms?

Reviews discuss saffron compounds such as crocins and safranal and possible biological pathways. These hypotheses can guide research, but they should not be turned into promises that saffron “switches off stress” or reliably causes relaxation without affecting alertness.

Our guides to saffron and stress and mental wellbeing explain why clinical outcomes matter more than an appealing mechanism.

Choosing an evening ritual

If you enjoy saffron’s flavour, a modest culinary serving of evening saffron tea or warm saffron milk can fit your routine. Keep the emphasis on the experience: aroma, warmth and a quiet moment.

Choose a serving and timing that feel comfortable. Avoid very large late drinks if they disturb your night. Plain saffron infusion has no tea leaves, while a blend with black or green tea introduces caffeine. Milk and optional sweeteners also change the recipe and may not suit everyone.

Amounts and timing: no universal prescription

Different clinical extracts have different specifications and study doses. A research dose is not a recommendation for self-treatment, and an extract cannot be converted reliably into a number of whole threads. Morning-versus-evening superiority has not been established for a homemade drink.

Follow a culinary recipe for flavour. For a supplement, discuss the actual product and your health circumstances with a doctor or pharmacist. Read our dosage guide and morning or evening guide.

Safety in the evening

Do not use saffron to replace prescribed sleep or psychiatric treatment, and do not combine concentrated products with sedating medicines or alcohol to seek a stronger effect. A pharmacist can review the medicines and supplements you use.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding, children and existing health conditions need particular care before supplement use. If you feel unexpectedly drowsy, unwell or less alert after taking a product, avoid driving or other activities that require full attention and obtain appropriate advice.

Learn more in the safety section and our pregnancy guide. Very large amounts should never be used to pursue a benefit; small short-term trials do not establish unlimited safety.

Frequently asked questions

Does saffron always make you sleepy?

No predictable immediate effect has been established for every person or preparation. Feeling comfortable after a warm drink is not proof of a sedative action.

Is it better than a sleeping pill?

That comparison cannot be made from tea recipes or small extract trials. Treatment choices depend on the cause of the sleep problem and individual clinical advice.

Can I use more if I am still awake?

Do not increase an amount to chase sleepiness. Persistent difficulty sleeping deserves assessment rather than progressively stronger preparations.

Sources and further reading

Lopresti et al.
