Human research has explored this question, especially using extracts. The evidence includes small positive trials and meta-analyses with differing results. It does not justify promising effortless weight loss or treating culinary saffron as an established obesity treatment.

A balanced reading

Some studies report changes in snacking or body measurements. Effects are modest and preparation-specific, and older reviews did not find a significant weight benefit. Saffron cannot replace individual nutritional or medical care.

AppetiteBody measurementsReviewsLimitationsSafety

Appetite, satiety and snacking

A 2010 randomised trial studied a proprietary saffron extract in 60 mildly overweight, otherwise healthy women over eight weeks. It reported less frequent snacking and a small weight reduction compared with placebo. This narrow study does not establish the same effect in men, other populations or people drinking saffron tea. Read the trial.

Snacking frequency, appetite ratings and total energy intake are different measurements. A change in one should not be described as proof of every other outcome. Nor does a proposed effect on mood or signalling establish a confirmed mechanism for appetite control.

Cravings and emotional eating

People may snack for many reasons, including hunger, habit, stress or food availability. A supplement trial cannot determine the cause of an individual’s cravings. Claims that saffron “switches off” emotional eating or removes the need for dietary changes go beyond the evidence.

If appetite changes are persistent, distressing or accompanied by other symptoms, discuss them with a qualified professional rather than choosing a supplement solely from an online claim.

Body composition and clinical populations

A 2017 trial examined saffron and crocin in patients with coronary artery disease, including appetite, dietary intake and body-composition outcomes. Its clinical population is important: results in those patients cannot be assumed to apply to every person seeking weight loss. Saffron preparations and isolated crocin also need separate interpretation. View the study.

Weight, body-mass index, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio are distinct measurements. A statistically significant result for one does not establish a benefit for all, and its size matters for practical interpretation.

What do systematic reviews show?

An earlier review found no significant weight effect

A 2022 meta-analysis in overweight and obese patients did not find significant reductions in body weight, BMI, waist circumference or hip circumference. It found a reduction in waist-to-hip ratio and called for stronger evidence. This limits broad claims that all reviews consistently show weight loss. Read the review abstract.

A newer analysis reports modest changes

A September 2026 meta-analysis included 28 trials and 1,623 participants. It reported average reductions of about 1.1 kg in weight, 0.4 BMI units and 1.1 cm in waist circumference, with no significant waist-to-hip-ratio effect. The authors described the clinical magnitude as modest and said further high-quality evidence is needed for definite recommendations. These pooled estimates are not predictions of an individual’s result. Such proposals can explain why a question is worth studying, but do not prove that the spice burns fat, reliably suppresses appetite or treats a metabolic condition in a particular person.

Limits of the evidence

Trials use different preparations and populations.

Many interventions are short, limiting conclusions about sustained weight changes.

Selected positive outcomes need to be considered alongside negative findings.

Statistical significance is different from a large or clinically meaningful change.

Extract research cannot be transferred directly to a culinary serving or tea.

Responsible choices

Enjoy saffron in recipes for flavour rather than expecting it to produce weight loss. Do not increase an amount to reproduce a study result. Concentrated products need individual review if you take medicines, have a health condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are considering use for a child.

Read our dosage guide, safety guide and pregnancy guide. For a weight-management concern, seek care that considers your health, eating patterns and goals.

Frequently asked questions

Can saffron tea make me lose weight?

The extract trials do not establish a weight-loss effect for a homemade tea.

Does less snacking prove a long-term benefit?

No. A short change in snacking does not establish sustained weight loss or long-term health outcomes.

Should I take a study dose?

A study method is not a personal prescription. Preparation, eligibility and health circumstances differ.

Sources and further reading

Gout et al.
